Hello Faye, I love you blog, it provides helpful information. I have a question I hope you can help with... My thirteen week old Labrador Retriever loves to play all through the night (keeping myself and hubby up) and sleep all day. At first we thought it was cute and that it would stop but no such luck.

I try playing with him all through the day to keep him up but it's not working. Do you have any ideas? My puppies name is Odyssey and any help you could give would be thankful.

Hello Janice and thank you for writing.

My advice to you is crate training. The use of a dog crate will provide your puppy a place where he can feel safe and secure. He will come to think of it as his safe place and will be happy to spend time there when needed.

The crate is also an an effective housebreaking tool, helps to prevent destructive behavior, and also helps reduce separation anxiety.

I am providing a link to a previous post we had on the All About Labradors blog to help you start your crate training: Crate Training for my Labrador Retriever. Start off by introducing him to the crate and continue your training from there.

I would recommend placing the dog crate in your bedroom. As it nears time for bed, make sure Odyssey has had PLENTY of playtime (a tired dog is a good dog) and has gone out to do his business. After he is finished, bring him up to the crate. You can add some safe toys to the crate to help keep him busy if he has any trouble sleeping.

He will awaken at night as a thirteen week old Labrador Retriever puppy's bladder is small and he will have to relieve himself. As Odyssey becomes more familiar with the house sleeping pattern, he will adjust his accordingly.

As for the daytime sleeping, Labrador Retriever puppies require large amounts of sleep, with this being a normal behaviour for puppies. Get him plenty of play toys, keeping him mentally as well as physically exercised (Kong toys are one of my favorites, just make sure you get the right size for your Labrador Retriever puppy and discard when pieces begin to break off).

Yellow Labrador Retriever with Yeast Infections

Do you have any suggestions on Allee's yeast around her vaginal area and front paws? She is on the allergy shots but the specialist said we will keep having to do Ketoconazole every so often, which I do not agree with. Seems ridiculous. Her Allergy shots are $175 a pop and we still have to put her on these drugs as well? She took them last in September and seems to need it again. She does good for a while then starts up again. I thought that would be gone with the shots but it isn't. Chris looked up online today and found 50/50 Apple Cider vinegar and distilled water, but who knows. I thought I would see if you had any thoughts on it.

Poor Allee, it seems like she has been through so much. Here are some recommendations for the sweet Allee:

If you suspect a yeast infection, you can try a solution made from equal parts white vinegar and water. This can help to prevent yeast infections, by lowering the skins pH. Spray it on her coat and leave it on without rinsing off.

As Chris has found, you can also use the apple cider vinegar and water (50/50) for itchy skin by putting it in a spray bottle and spraying on infected areas. I would not use it on open sores though.

You can also try establishing the pH balance in Allee's system with apple cider vinegar. You can check Allee's pH balance, with pH strips, and help to re-establish the correct balance (6.2 - 6.5) with the apple cider vinegar. One to two teaspoons per day in her food or water will help keep the ph balance correct.

In regards to APV - you will get arguments back and forth with apple cider vinegar as some say it contributes to the yeast infection while others swear by it. You will also get that with garlic that I mention below, as well as commercial dog food vs homemade dog food and so on and so on.

I've had many people report they had great results using the NZYMES Yeast Kit which you can find further information at nzymes.com.

You may also want to add garlic supplementation to Allee's diet as this helps kill bacteria, fungi and infections in the system. Again, others swear by the use of garlic for helping with many ailments and others such as the ASPCA list garlic as poisonous to pets. I also still believe (we talked about this in previous e-mails) you are going to have to strengthen Allee's immune system, especially with all the different antibiotics that Allee is and was on. Antibiotics are a friend to yeast infections!

Probiotics and digestive enzymes, help in keeping the pH balance of the stomach in proper balance, helping to prevent yeast infections. Probitoics are live cultures found in yogurt which will help out in maintaining and increasing the good flora (bacteria) of the gut.

You could also supplement Allee's diet with regular, non-flavored yogurt with live cultures daily. Make sure there are no sugars or sweeteners in it. Add it to her food, or your can use it in the Kong toys if you use them.

One last thing for my own knowledge, I looked back at your previous e-mail and I'm wondering if you ever tried the Dinovite products you mentioned in those e-mails. If so, did you have any luck?

Thank you again. We just switched her from Apple to White Vinegar, so we will see if it is any better. We had also started her on plain yogurt and acidophilus pills (regular from health food store) prior to receiving your e-mail.

He hasn't wanted to spray her paws because he doesn't want it all over our carpet, so he is only spraying her crotch area.

We did try Dynovite and we gave it the full 90 days as they say and it was a complete waste, we also tried Itchy Dog from Zoom, another waste.

I guess we will still try for now, so far she is still miserable. Her jaw, crotch and front paws. I just feel so bad for her as I know how annoying a little itch can be and she is constantly bothered by it.

I have been reading the article in reference to Cosmo losing hair, I too have a yellow lab that is the color of Cosmo (you can see the articles Todd refers to below) and the same age with the same problem. The hair loss started recently as well for no reason. My dog is a male, neutered and is experiencing the same issue. I took him to the vet and was diagnosed with Mange.

He has been treated for almost a month now and seemed to move forward off that diagnosis and treatment, however I am starting to notice hair loss in other places now. I will be contacting the vet again today. I will let you know what I hear.

Sorry it took so long to get you the information. Willis was diagnosed as having sarcoptic mange, and was treated using the drug ivermectin. Willis is still losing hair but it is also growing back. It has been a long process and I hope it is done. We shall see. I will let you know if I find anything else out.

How to Get Rid Of Dog Fleas

Here's a wonderful article titled How to Get Rid Of Dog Fleas by Ryan Williams that should be helpful to some of you. I receive many questions in regards to fleas (especially when the warmer weather comes), so this article, along with the other information we have listed on All About Labradors should help combat any flea problems you may have.

Pet owners everywhere are at one time or another faced with the issue of how to get rid of fleas! When your pet gets infested with fleas it can be a terribly frustrating experience for both the owner and pet. Our local pet food store sells an assortment of flea collars, flea powders and flea shampoo including Frontline for fleas. Even though the staff are helpful, it is pretty hard to know which product to use and almost impossible to know all of the active ingredients of these dog flea products. There can be some hazardous side-effects of those well known but potentially highly harmful dog flea products. The chemicals used in some of the household name products and major national popular brands on the market may be poisoning our pets and marginalizing our own family's health at the same time. So the question is, how to get rid of fleas safely?

More often these days, pet owners are seeking natural or homeopathic alternatives to the issue of dog fleas. Some of the most commonly used natural dog flea remedies are outlined below:

1. Household salt solution. Sprinkle table salt all over your house. Pay particular attention to where Fido takes his nap. Let the salt sit for at least one week and then look at the results. Fleas don't seem to like salt. Your dog will lie down on the rugs, etc and the salt will also get on to his fur, fleas don't like this. A few days later the fleas are gone.

2. Baking Soda to get rid of fleas. Cover your dog with baking soda. The baking soda will smother the fleas and kill them. This all-natural flea remedy is often recommended for puppies and kittens who are too young to be exposed to any flea remedy chemical. You can also use talcum powder or baby powder.

3. Olive oil remedy. For the fleas on adult dogs, you could try an olive oil bath. Start from the dogs head and work your way back so the fleas don't move to the face where it's really tough to pluck them off. Evidence suggests that the fleas just drown in it and fall out. Then just shampoo the dog fleas down the drain.

4. The Garlic solution. Some people swear that garlic is the best all-natural dog fleas remedy. Some people use a garlic pill supplement while others use freshly chopped garlic and mix it into the dog food. The fleas don't like the scent emitted through the skin of the dog after he ingests garlic.

It would appear that there are many natural alternatives to treating dog fleas. These treatments will likely work best at the point of initial infestation. For a really bad cases of fleas you might need to try a stronger dog flea remedy such as Frontline. In figuring out how to get rid of fleas its best to do your research. However, with all matters pertaining to the health of our dogs and cats, please check with your doctor about potential side effects.

How to Pick Out the Best Labrador Retriever Puppy

How do I go about picking out the best Labrador Retriever puppy of the litter? Should I get the one with the big paws or small head? How about the runt of the litter? Male or female?

I receive many questions like this so I posted a video below that should be helpful to you.

Some advice from All About Labradors:

You can have your breeder choose the Labrador Retriever puppy for you, based on the qualities that you tell them you are looking for. Who better to know the Labrador Retriever puppies personalities than you breeder raising them.

You can also go visit the breeder and observe the puppies. Watch which ones play rough with the others, which ones are pushy with their litter mates and which ones are playful and content around the others.

Watch to see which puppies notice you, which ones follow you when you move. Verbally call the puppies to encourage them to follow. Ask to hold the puppies to see which are comfortable and relaxed as opposed to growling or showing teeth. Look for positive signs to help narrow down you choice. Don't just make your choice on cuteness.

Happy to hear your Labrador Retriever is catching on to his housebreaking. As far as nipping goes, I have an article posted to the All About Labradors blog that I will list here for you.

If your Labrador puppy does have a habit of biting, nipping, or “mouthing” you or your loved ones, try some or all of the following to help correct its behavior.

1. Teach your Labrador Retriever puppy that biting hurts. When he does bite, let out a sharp “no” or “ouch” while maintaining eye contact with him. It will teach him that his play is to rough, and you will not continue to play until he is gentler.

2. Close Your Mouth – gently hold your Labrador Retriever’s mouth shut while stating “no”.

3. Time Out – while maintaining eye contact with your pup, state “no”, or “ouch”, and then get up and move away, stopping interaction with your Labrador. You can also place him in his crate, if you do use one for training. By walking away, or placing him in his crate, you teach him that he will lose his playmate if he continues to nip and bite.

4. Rough Housing – Do you let your Labrador puppy grab your hands in its mouth while playing? Then when he bites your hand to hard, you scold him and state “no”. You’re encouraging him one minute and scolding him the next. What your doing is completely confusing your poor little Labrador puppy.

5. Teach your Lab pup the “off” command.

Helpful Tips:

Make sure your Labrador puppy gets plenty of play time and exercise daily. These are great distractions and may help reduce your puppies biting.

Be consistent with whatever methods you use to help break the nipping and biting habit. Make sure family members are consistent also.

Have plenty of chew toys for your Labrador puppy. Kong toys are wonderful, just make sure you choose the right size for your puppy and discard when pieces start to break off.

Always reinforce your Labs good behavior. Whenever he plays nicely or licks you without biting and nipping, shower him with love and praise.

Watch the tone of your voice with the “no” and “ouch” commands. They should always be sharp and to the point.

A Word of Caution:

If you have small young children, never leave your Labrador Retriever puppy alone with them until he has learned biting and nipping are unacceptable.

Games like tug-of-war and rough housing encourage your Labrador puppy to bite. Waiting until he is fully trained in the “off” command until introducing these games.

If for some reason your Lab puppy becomes more aggressive when he bites, or your training methods don’t seem to be working, seek help from your veterinarian or professional trainer.

Apply one or more of the above training procedures, be consistent with your training, and shower your Labrador Retriever puppy with praise for doing good, and you’ll be on your way to nipping your Labradors biting habit in the bud.

Are You Better Off Adopting a Puppy or an Adult Dog?

I had this article sent in to me regarding the adopting of a puppy or an adult dog that I thought would be helpful to some of the readers of this blog. I receive many questions asking about adoption and this article gives you something to think about before making a choice.

Dog Adoption: Are You Better Off Adopting a Puppy or an Adult Dog by Jim Navary

After a family discussion on the pros and cons you've decided that you want to adopt a family dog. The next decision should be whether you should adopt a new puppy or an adult dog.

Undoubtedly it can be lots of fun having a playful puppy in the house. However, adopting a puppy is a major decision requiring a major time commitment. For the first couple of weeks, both you and your new pup will have to adjust to your new living arrangements. There may be a few sleepless nights in store for both of you. In addition, new puppies must be supervised closely and properly taught what is and is not acceptable behavior. And don't forget housetraining! In some cases this can be a difficult time with numerous "accidents" to clean up. Your patience while housetraining a puppy may be stretched to the limit. Also, young pups love to chew on things. Keep in mind that it may take at least six to eight months for your little buddy to outgrow his chewing phase and another 12 months until he's fully mature.

After giving the idea some serious thought, some people conclude that they may not be able to provide the time and attention that a new puppy deserves. If that's the case, you may want to consider adopting an adult dog instead of a pup.

Many adult dogs have already been housetrained. You'll likely still have a few accidents but it won't take long for the adult dog to learn your rules. Adult dogs are easier to train as they have longer attention spans than excitable puppies. In fact, you may find that they have already learned some basic commands from their previous owners. Choosing an adult dog, you will already be aware of its full size, true personality, and health. As puppies develop, one or more of these traits may end up being a big surprise. An adult dog may be a better choice if you have young children. Older dogs may have already had experience with children and they are much more predictable than puppies. Playing with a new puppy you'll soon discover that they have needle-sharp teeth that can accidentally injure a young child.

Why not consider adopting a canine "senior citizen". Even nine or ten year old dogs can still have many more good years to offer to a loving family. And, for me at least, just knowing that I've rescued an "unadoptable" pooch from probable euthanasia is very gratifying indeed.

Adopting a dog requires your commitment to ensure a happy, healthy partnership between you and your new best friend. However, it can really be great fun and it's definitely well worth the effort!

Hello Elaine, thank you for your e-mail.

I do have to say I am not a big fan of training pads. Trying to teach your Labrador Retriever to relieve himself in the house is never a good idea as it will only confuse him and teach him that it's ok to eliminate himself in you home.

I am assuming that you are not home with Ratlif for long periods of time, that being the reason you want to use training pads, but it is very difficult to teach a Labrador Retriever to differentiate between a training pad and you carpet, furniture or bed. My advice drop the training pads, get yourself a dog crate and practice housebreaking your lovable Labrador Retriever.

To empty the anal glands, a tissue is held up to the anus and both sides of the anal area are squeezed. If the doesn't work, then yes the finger is next. Yes it will make him smell, but more toward the rectum with a strong unpleasant smelling odor (sort of metallic odor). Is this what your smelling?

Did you check Jet's skin?

His skin is good and his coat is nice and shinny and full. I feed him Nutria Natural Choice weight management…he’s a few pounds overweight according to the vet J. He gets 2 large dog treats per day too.

I was smelling him last night and his head area isn’t the problem but when I smelt at his butt it wasn’t so bad either but oh my goodness his paws are smelly. When you sit and sniff him he’s not so bad but when he walks by or lay’s beside you it’s yuck Jet man you are one smelly dog.

I’ll try your suggestion for his anal glands and see what happens. I notice the skin on the inside of his ears do need a good cleaning, I remember one time being told to use rubbing alcohol, is that right?

I really should have named him Shadow because he is definitely my shadow… love my dog J

Hi Bev,

I forgot to reply to your last question on ear cleaning.

You can use white vinegar mixed 1:3 with water to rinse the ears.

One of the best products I've used with success for gunk in my Labrador ears is called a blue power wash (actually I have seen it called many other things, as it has been on the Internet for ages).

"Blue Power Ear Treatment"

INGREDIENTS:

16 Oz. Isopropyl Alcohol (Witch Hazel)
4 Tablespoons Boric Acid Powder
16 Drops Gentian Violet Solution 1%

Mix together in alcohol bottle and shake well. You will also need to shake solution every time you use it to disperse the Boric Acid Powder. An eye dropper can be used to fill the ear.

TREATMENT: Evaluate condition of ears before treating and if very inflamed and sore do not attempt to pull hair or clean out ear at all. Wait until inflammation has subsided which will be about 2 days.

Shake the bottle each time before using. Flood the ear with solution (gently squirt bottle), massage gently for approximately a minute, then wipe with a cloth or tissue. Flood again a second time, and wipe again without massaging in. The dog will shake out the excess. Be advised, the Gentian Violet does stain.

The SCHEDULE of treatment is as follows:

Treat 2x per day for the first week to two weeks depending upon severity of ears
Treat 1x per day for the next 1-2 weeks
Treat 1x per month (or even less frequently, depending on the dog)

All of these ingredients should be available at your local pharmacy. I like to use witch hazel instead of alcohol, as if any scratches are in the ear, the alcohol can cause burning. The Boric Acid Powder soothes the ear and the Gentian Violet Solution is an ant-infection agent. The solution appears to work well on many ear problems. I also like to warm my solution slightly, under warm water, but you can use it either way.

There is also a commercial version of this solution available.

I do recommend a visit to your veterinarian for most problems with your Labrador Retrievers but will also list some suggestions that might help.

How are you? My apologies for the delayed response as I receive many questions at the All About Labradors blog and it does take me some time to answer them all.

Thank you for your question and for the wonderful photos of Jet. How did he do as your ring bearer?

Bev, I need you to make sure of two things. The first thing I want you to check is to make sure it's Jet's coat that smells and not his ears, as infected ears can give off a strong foul odor. If you do determine it is his ears an appointment with your veterinarian is advisable. Let me know if this is the case as I have further information I can give to you to help out with ear infections.

The second thing is to check to make sure the smell is to his whole coat and not just the area around his rectum, as this could be a problem with his anal glands. With this you will notice a strong unpleasant smelling odor (sort of metallic odor). You might also notice some scooting of the rear end on the ground, licking or chewing at the area, or any other sign of discomfort in this region. Once again let me know as I can also provide you with information to help with this.

If you notice no problems with the first two things I mentioned here, there's a possibility that Jet has some sort of skin problem. An bad odor from your Labrador Retrievers coat is often a sign of a skin infection.

What you need to do is to take a look at Jet's skin. Look through his fur to see if you notice any open sores, pimples, boils, or rashes.

Yeast infections are common in dogs that love the water, and who loves the water better than our Labrador Retrievers. Without proper drying of Jet (the quick shake that he does doesn't always do the trick), warm, moist areas are left on his body and in ears where the yeast love to breed.

A good dog degreasing shampoo may be helpful, but if there is an infection on the skin, oral antibiotics or oral antifungals will be prescribed by a veterinarian.

If you suspect a yeast infection, you can try a solution made from equal parts white vinegar and water. This can help to prevent yeast infections, by lowering the skins pH. Spray it on his coat and leave it on without rinsing off.

Do you notice Jet's coat to be dull, dry, greasy or scaly. If so, a cause of the problem can be Seborrhea. Seborrhea is a common skin disorder resulting in excessively greasy or dry skin. Seborrhea can be dry (seborrhea secca) or oily (seborrhea oleosa). Your veterinarian will run test to try to find the underlying cause if Seborrhea is suspected. Shampoos and conditioners can be used to control Seborrhea.

You also want to make sure you're feeding Jet a high quality dog food as odors come from within. Let me know what you feed Jet (brand, flavor, treats, etc)

Supplementation with essential fatty acids can also be of great help to Jet.

He doesn’t have an ear infection but I do know he suffers from the gland issue you described… his mom has it too, I didn’t know if could make him stink though. There is a good sized list of foods that can be toxic to your Labrador Retriever - chocolate, grapes, coffee, alcoholic beverages, and macadamia nuts to name a few.

The ASPCA has compiled a list of top 10 people foods that you should not feed your pet that I would like you to take a look at:

On the above list you will see garlic listed. I personally have been feeding my two Labrador Retrievers garlic juice for health reasons (small amount mixed with their food) and have never had any problems with this. The ASPCA states "an occasional low dose, such as what might be found in pet foods or treats, likely will not cause a problem, but we recommend that you do NOT give your pets large quantities of these foods". You will get positives and negatives recommendations for the use of garlic.
