Labrador Retriever Tricks - Give Your Paw

Give Your Paw is a simple trick to teach your Labrador Retriever. You can use this as a base later on when you go to teach your Labrador Retriever how to wave or shake.

1. Make sure your surroundings are free of distractions.

2. Face your Labrador Retriever and give the command "Give Your Paw" while taking your Labrador Retriever's paw in your hand. Offer plenty of praise and give them a treat.

3. Repeat step two until your Labrador Retriever starts raising their paw after you give the command and before you reach for it. Again, offer lots of praise.

4. Stop your training for the day and reward your Labrador for doing such a great job.

5. In your next training session, again face your Labrador Retriever and state "Give Your Paw" while holding out your hand. If your Labrador Retriever remembers they will put their paw in your hand. If so, offer lots of praise. If your Labrador Retriever forgot, back up to step two and pick up their paw a couple of times. Repeat steps one through five until your Labrador Retriever does it every time.

Remember, patience and praise are the key to training your Labrador Retriever.

After your Labrador Retriever has this trick down pat, you can add some variety by teaching them to give either his left or right paw on command.

Feel free to e-mail us photos or videos of your Labrador Retriever learning Give Your Paw. We would love to add them to this post!
