Understanding Your Labrador
Labrador retrievers were bred to work closely with man, are naturally athletic and intelligent (even though my daughter likes to call one of her two labs "Dopey"). Physically tough, these people oriented creatures need plenty of companionship and interaction with their owners. Labrador owners should be willing to provide plenty of time with their dogs, and provide ample space for the dogs training and exercise.
Labradors do require lots of Attention. They want to be with you and be part of your family. You will find them constantly looking to play with you, and looking for your constant companionship. You will even find them sleeping next to you if allowed.
The Labrador loves the water and are excellent swimmers. My two labs swim for hours on end. Looking for a little fun, pick up a ball or stick and the lab will play fetch until your blue in the face!
Problems: Labs should not be expected to lead an independent life. Leaving them alone for extended periods of time can lead to unwanted behavior: digging, chewing, clawing to name a few. Labs will also eat just about anything, as I have found out the hard way (sneakers, kids toys and the garbage). We have also encountered jumping problems, mainly from excitement, which could be a problem with small children. All of these problems can be corrected with the proper training and plenty of love.
