Labrador Retriever Puppy Training - "Come and Fetch"

For the safety of your Labrador Retriever puppy, the "Come" command (sometimes called recall) is the most important command to teach.

Our ultimate goal when teaching your Labrador Retriever the "Come" command is to receive an immediate response from your Labrador upon hearing your command. You want to have a well disciplined Labrador Retriever that can always be brought to your side regardless of the situation.

Tips for teaching the "Come" command:

Remember to offer plenty of praise to your Labrador Retriever as soon as he comes to you.

Remember to never pursue your Labrador Retriever when teaching the "Come" command.

Never give punishment if your Labrador doesn't come, for it will only associate the command to something negative.

Training sessions should also be short as well as enjoyable.

The below video shows "Drake," and 11 week old Labrador Retriever puppy at the Colorado Cottonwood Ranch and Kennel, learning the "Come" and "Fetch" command.

Teaching your Labrador Retriever how to retrieve can be a fun game for both you and your Labrador. It's fun to go outside and play fetch with your Labrador Retriever, providing a little bonding time with your Labrador and it's a great way for your Lab to use his energy in a productive way.

Have your Labrador Retriever puppy gain interest in the object you are using to "Retrieve" before starting. Practice in an area that will be free of distractions (I love the using of the hallway with closed doors from the video).

Use the "Fetch" command as you throw the object and offer plenty of praise on your Labrador Retrievers way back.

Always remember, patience and plenty of praise!

Feel free to share any tips you may have in regards to "Come" and Retrieve".
