Humanity and Pets Partnered Through the Years (“HAPPY”) Act

USA: Help Make Pet Care More Affordable--Support the HAPPY Act!

I receive an e-mail from my wonderful friend Jamie, on an important issue that I just took action on, and I wanted to pass it on to the readers of All About Labradors to try and get you guys to take action and to help spread the word.

We need your help in supporting and cosponsoring the Humanity and Pets Partnered Through the Years (“HAPPY”) Act, which would allow individuals to claim tax deductions for qualified pet care expenses.

"The bill would allow any taxpayer who legally owns one or more domesticated animals to take an annual income tax deduction of up to $3,500 for pet care expenses, including veterinary care costs."

"The HAPPY Act is important because it will help Americans provide their pets with the medical attention and quality of life they deserve, while also ensuring that more pets get to remain in their loving homes and don’t wind up on the streets or in the already overburdened shelter system."

On the ASPCA website (link below), there is a letter that you can email to your U.S. representative and urge him or her to support and cosponsor the HAPPY Act, H.R. 3501!

To help do your part visit: Humanity and Pets Partnered Through the Years (“HAPPY”) Act.

Please help spread the word by telling all your friends. Thanks!

A big thank you to Jamie for all the important as well as funny e-mails you send. It's greatly appreciated.

Chocolate Labrador Retriever with sensitive stomach - UPDATE

Here is an update from a reader's e-mail question regarding her two female chocolate Labrador Retriever's with sensitive stomachs.

You can read that entire e-mailed question here: Chocolate Labrador Retriever with sensitive stomach

Subject: Chocolate Labrador Retriever with sensitive stomach - UPDATE

From: Cynthia (USA)

Labrador Retriever's Name: Reese and Hannah

Dear Fay,

Thank you SO much for your response AND for turning to an expert for further advice. My girls Reese and Hannah appreciate it as well!

Reese has the most sensitive stomach with explosive diarrhea and rectal bleeding, while Hannah's belly is much more tolerable. I went to homemade food after simply changing the bag of holistic food caused Reese these episodes.

After having them fully tested by the vet, I have Hannah on Wellness Holistic Puppy Food. She has been doing great with the change! Reese, on the other hand, I continue to cook for.....a meal of boiled pasta/rice, boiled beef/eggs, and a small amount of yogurt. I have started her on a holistic multivitamin supplement from Cutter's Mill (an organic Pet Food store) in my area. Crossing my fingers she continues to do well with no episodes of rectal bleeding.

I give them carrots as snacks which seem to be tolerated by both fairly well. I have never had a lab with stomach issues, in fact every other lab I have had could eat anything and everything!

I will certainly go ahead with the Aloe and green beans. I don't think I could swallow making chicken gizzards/hearts/etc in a saute of olive oil though!

Thanks so much!
Cynthia

Labrador Retriever Tricks - Give Your Paw

Give Your Paw is a simple trick to teach your Labrador Retriever. You can use this as a base later on when you go to teach your Labrador Retriever how to wave or shake.

1. Make sure your surroundings are free of distractions.

2. Face your Labrador Retriever and give the command "Give Your Paw" while taking your Labrador Retriever's paw in your hand. Offer plenty of praise and give them a treat.

3. Repeat step two until your Labrador Retriever starts raising their paw after you give the command and before you reach for it. Again, offer lots of praise.

4. Stop your training for the day and reward your Labrador for doing such a great job.

5. In your next training session, again face your Labrador Retriever and state "Give Your Paw" while holding out your hand. If your Labrador Retriever remembers they will put their paw in your hand. If so, offer lots of praise. If your Labrador Retriever forgot, back up to step two and pick up their paw a couple of times. Repeat steps one through five until your Labrador Retriever does it every time.

Remember, patience and praise are the key to training your Labrador Retriever.

After your Labrador Retriever has this trick down pat, you can add some variety by teaching them to give either his left or right paw on command.

Feel free to e-mail us photos or videos of your Labrador Retriever learning Give Your Paw. We would love to add them to this post!

Positive Reinforcement and Treat Training

Positive reinforcement means giving your Labrador Retriever something pleasant or rewarding immediately after she does something you want her to do. It makes that behavior more likely to occur in the future, and is one of the most powerful tools for shaping or changing your Labrador Retriever’s behavior.

Timing is the key with positive reinforcement Labrador Retriever training. Your Labrador Retriever must be rewarded immediately for responding appropriately to a cue. That is, through a reinforcement (dog treat), your dog will associate particular behaviors with actual rewards. Consistency is essential!!

In this video, Caninestein's Stephanie Colman talks about Treat Training and getting started with positive reinforcement.
